May 21, 2009
GD EXPRESS Carrier Bhd (GDEX) has taken a step closer to realising its dream to expand the company's express delivery business to Laos, its second international foray after establishing its first overseas presence in Singapore in 2007.
In a press release, its chief executive officer Leong Chee Tong said since the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in January this year with Laos's national postal company, Enterprise Des Postes Lao (EPL), both parties have moved quickly with their feasibility studies on the joint venture.
He said the signing of the MoU was to develop international and domestic express delivery services under shared brands for the Laotian market.
Leong said GDEX officials visited Laos on March this yeart to conduct a ten day feasibility study on EPL and express delivery industry.
He said the Laotian environment is very different from Malaysia and there is much potential to develop express delivery services there.
"Laos is relatively a small country with a population of six million people and as the country is opening up, GDEX can participate in the development of various aspects of its infrastructure," Leong said.
He said officials from EPL and the National Authority of Post and Telecommunications, Laos, last week completed their week-long feasibility study of the express delivery operations of GDEX Malaysia and Singapore.
